ある朝突然暴漢に襲われた座頭市は、一人を斬り殺し、もう一人の腕を斬り落した。こんな血なまぐさい旅に嫌気のさした座頭市は、昔、あんまの手ほどきをうけた彦の市師匠と、その娘お小夜を麻生の宿に訪ねた。だが、彦の市は殺され、お小夜は宿場の親分錣山の辰五郎のために、今は名も錦木と変え女郎に身を沈めていた。驚いた座頭市は、お小夜のいる丁字楼を訪ねた。しかしお小夜は辰五郎の息のかかった郡代役所の磯田幸右衛門のいうままにならず激しい折檻の末土蔵に閉じ込められていた。土蔵に忍びこんだ座頭市はお小夜から事件のあらましを聞いた。--彦の市は、あんまの最高位である検校位をもらうため、三百両の金を持って京都へ旅立った。が、途中何者かに殺され金をうばわれた。さらに辰五郎は親切ごかしに貸した百両をたてにとり、お小夜を丁字楼の女郎にしてしまったのだ--その夜座頭市は井戸尻軍十郎と名...。An insane man first loves then grows to hate his neighbor, an old man whose penetrating gaze unnerves the insane man.
