本剧基于真实事件、2004年法国纪录片《楼梯悬案》、书籍《Written in Blood》等素材创作而成。故事将探索Michael Peterson的生活，他那位于北卡罗来纳州的大家庭，以及他妻子Kathleen Peterson十分可疑的死亡。。Set in 1989, Jake (Harmon), an out-of-work photojournalist who struggles with addiction and a troubled past, takes a job as watchman of a wilderness lodge on a remote island in the Pacific Northwest, alongside veteran handyman Sparky (Granger). Jake sets up a darkroom to develop the photos he shoots, which begin to reveal disturbing premonitions of their future.。
