1930年代，浙江农村。老通宝（李心敏饰）自从去年养蚕亏本后，凡事都要看黄道吉日，在亲家担保下，他从陈少爷（王绍晨饰）那借来二十个大洋，重新饲养蚕宝宝，以期秋天有个好收成。小寡妇荷花（李姝饰）被村里人称作丧门星，人人见了绕着走，但令老通宝气恼的是小儿子阿多（赵锦焘饰）对荷花很好，很令老通宝晦气。随着蚕宝宝一天天长大，是非也跟着多起来，村里传出荷花连蚕都克的流言。由于桑叶不够吃，荷花将自家桑叶送给老通宝，老通宝以沾有邪气为由扔掉。但桑叶的匮乏让老通宝十分焦急，不得已，老通宝以家业作抵押，向陈少爷借了“驴打滚”的高利贷度难关，怎知镇上却传来今年不收蚕的噩耗......。Kato is an aspiring screenwriter treading water.
